About Stuart

I am a clinical psychologist licensed in the State of Virginia. I provide both in-person therapy as well as teletherapy through Zoom. In addition to Virginia, where I am licensed, I can provide teletherapy in 42 states/commonwealths through PSYPACT®. Please consult the PSYPACT map to see whether I can work via teletherapy in your area.

I see individuals and couples, as well as providing supervision and training for professionals. I specialize in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), which I have studied, taught, and researched for the past 25 years. I am certified as a teacher and supervisor by the International Experiential Dynamic Therapy Association (IEDTA). I am also core faculty of the ISTDP Training Program at the Washington School of Psychiatry.

I am a former part-time instructor at the Harvard Medical School and George Mason University. For a decade while in Boston I was the Assistant Director of the Psychotherapy Research Program at Harvard Medical School, where I conducted psychotherapy process/outcome research in close association with Dr. Leigh McCullough. In addition to my work with Dr. McCullough, I have been fortunate to receive further training and supervision with two giants in the ISTDP world, Jon Frederickson and Dr. Allan Abbass.

My approach to couples therapy is influenced by both ISTDP and the Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy (PACT). PACT is a cutting-edge treatment that integrates attachment theory, neurobiology, and arousal theory. During my doctoral studies I conducted research on the developmental stages of marital relationships.

My doctoral internship was at Cambridge Health Alliance/Harvard Medical School. After attaining my Ph.D., I completed a two-year fellowship in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the Program for Psychotherapy at Cambridge Health Alliance/Harvard Medical School. I also completed a fellowship in behavioral medicine at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, and a fellowship in forensic psychology at Tufts New England Medical.

The postpartum clinical work I offer includes:

  • Individual therapy for pregnant or postpartum mothers

  • Couples therapy for partners coping with pregnancy or postpartum struggles

  • “Pre-Baby Counseling” (akin to premarital counseling, this includes a time-limited range of sessions to avoid common postpartum relationship struggles and strengthen coping skills and emotional intimacy)

  • Postpartum group therapy for mothers

  • Postpartum group therapy for couples

  • Family therapy to strengthen family bonds and reduce discord while family system adapts to new baby

I have completed specialized training in ISTDP and am beginning my final year of ISTDP mastery core training at the Washington School of Psychiatry. I have also completed Level 1 Emotion-Focused-Therapy training for couples as well as Dr. Daniel Siegel’s Interpersonal Neurobiological training.
